All you need to know to succeed with lucerne establishment.
Lucerne establishement following the demise of Hunter River in the
late 1970's has proven difficult right across Australia and on all
soil types.
The establishment period of a lucerne stand lasts from sowing intil
the end of the following summer - a period of up to ten months.
A high death rate of seedlings occurs during this period but after
this, with correct managements, death rate slows considerably.
Re-establishing lucerne is more difficult than initial establishement
on new land.
Increased susceptibility to wind erosion, water reppellence, loss
of soil structure, surface sealing and hardpan decvelopment, and increasing
soil acidity make lucerne establishement difficult.
